Year 4 Multiplication Check
The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) at Amport School
All Year 4 children in England take part in a statutory Multiplication Tables Check during the summer term. This short online check is designed to assess how confidently pupils can recall their times tables facts, which are an essential foundation for later mathematical learning.
The MTC has been compulsory since 2022 and takes place during a three week window in June. Each school chooses the exact day for their pupils to complete the check. Children with special educational needs will be supported appropriately so they can access the check in a way that meets their individual needs.
How the check works
-
The check is completed on a computer or tablet.
-
Children answer 25 multiplication questions, each worth one mark.
-
They have 6 seconds to answer each question before the next one appears.
-
The whole check takes no more than 5 minutes.
-
Questions are selected from all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12, with a particular focus on the more challenging tables such as 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12.
-
Children will not be asked the reverse of a question (for example, if they see 3 × 4, they will not also be asked 4 × 3).
-
Before the official check, pupils will have the chance to practise using the same format so they feel confident and familiar with how it works.
The time limit is designed to test quick recall, rather than working out answers, which is why regular practice makes such a difference.
