Rowan Class
Summer Term 2025
Reading
In the Summer term the children will be making comparisons within and across books. The children will participate in discussions about books that are read to them and those they can read for themselves, building on their own and others’ ideas and challenging views courteously. They will explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read, including through formal presentations and debates, maintaining a focus on the topic and using notes where necessary. The children will provide reasoned justifications for their views and ask questions to improve understanding. They will Identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.
To help your child at home, please continue to encourage them to read daily and record their progress in their reading records for the teachers to see.
Writing
In the Summer term, we will be focusing on writing to describe, to evoke ideas and images and to convey emotion and powerful messages about conflict. Writing to describe a setting description in an inhospitable place and writing to entertain. The children will practise skills already learnt this year through extended pieces of writing and they will have time to fully edit and evaluate their work individually and with their peers.
Maths
In the Summer Term, the children will be focusing on the following units:
Year 5: Shape, Position and Direction, Decimals, Negative numbers, Converting units and Volume.
Year 6: Shape and Position and Direction. Following SATs children will be carrying out maths projects.
French
In French this term the children will learn about visiting a town in France. The children will be able to name places in a town, follow simple directions and describe the relationship between places by using prepositions. The children will learn how to construct negative sentences correctly and give a reasoned opinion for visiting a place.
The children will also learn about French sport and the Olympics. They will learn how to pronounce the name of a sport and use the verbs jouer and faire correctly with different sports. The children will be able to give an opinion in relation to sports. Pronounce the name of a sport accurately and confidently. They will write an article based on an imaginary Olympic sport.
Computing
The children will be learning about programming and an introduction to Python. The children will test and change ideas throughout the lesson and explain what their program does. They will be able to use nested loops in their design and explain why they need two repeats. They will also recognise that computers can choose random numbers; decompose the program into an algorithm and modify a program to personalise it.
Science
This term our topics are Sound and Making New Substances. We will be looking at how sound is produced and travels, along with investigating pitch and volume. We will also be visiting the Winchester Science Centre to further our understanding of sound and experiencing a planetarium show. In Making New Substances we will be investigating reversible and irreversible changes through a variety of practical activities and looking at the properties of different substances; recognising when a new substance is made.
Music
In music the children will be exploring the topic Building a Groove. They will recreate one or more drum grooves, create their own drum patterns as part of a group and notate their created drum groove. They will also perform their summer production.
Art and Design
Flowers is our art topic for this term where we will be studying the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. We begin by exploring colour and mixing and matching to accurately create different hues, tints, tones and shades in order to make observational paintings of flowers. We then move onto using a grid method to create large-scale flowers inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork before applying our knowledge of different media to create collages.
Design Technology
This term for DT we will be designing and making bird boxes. The children will learn how to make a secure structure, consider design elements, take accurate measurements and cut precisely as well as work as a group in order to design and make their bird box.
History
In history we will be exploring British history and the Changing Power of the Monarchy. We will be looking at four monarchs and when they reigned; gaining an overview of the events in each monarch’s life. We will explore how these events affected the relative power of the monarch or parliament in order for us to answer the enquiry question: Why does parliament run the country rather than the King?
Geography
Our focus for geography is “Why does population change?” We will be investigating why certain parts of the world are more populated than others, describe what might influence the environments people live in as well as describe the causes of climate change and explain its impact on the global population.
