Beech Class

Summer Term 2025

English

This term the children will be looking at five different text drivers to inspire their writing. The first book they will be using as a text driver is My First Book of Nature and they will be writing to inform and using information from poems to write formal non-fiction texts. They will then be looking at Sleeping Dragon and they will be writing to entertain by writing a fantasy story about a dragon. Next, they will look at the day the crayons quit, writing a letter from other objects such as ‘The day the shoes quit’. They will be using Oh no George! to write to narrate and looking at That Rabbit belongs to Emily Brown to write to explain to the queen why she cannot have Stanley. The children will be using adverbs, rhetorical questions, repetition of structure, dialogue exclamations and writing in different tenses. They are also going to be evaluating and editing their own writing to improve.

 

Year 1 Maths

This term in Math's the Year ones will be working on the following topics:

Multiplication and Division, Fractions, Position and Direction, Place value (within 100), money and time.

 

Year 2 Maths

This term in Math's the Year two’s will be working on the following topics:

Fractions, Time, Statistics and position and direction.

 

Yr1 Phonics

This term, the children in Year 1 are going to be recapping their phonics that they learnt last term and will be expanding their knowledge. They will start by revisiting phase 5 tricky words and sounds before moving on to learning new phase 5 sounds and alternative digraphs.  During these phonics sessions the children orally blend words that include the sound and also write the sound and words on a whiteboard and then include these words in sentences.

 

Yr2 Spellings

This term they will be recapping the spellings of tricky words and looking at the spelling rules. They will be using different techniques such as pyramid writing and rainbow writing to learn these spellings. These spellings will include: The /ɒ/ sound spelt a after w and qu , The /ɔ:/ sound spelt ar after w, The possessive apostrophe (singular nouns), The suffixes –ment, –ness, –ful , –less and –ly, Homophones and near-homophones, The /dʒ/ sound spelt as ge and dge at the end of words, and sometimes spelt as g elsewhere in words before e, i and y and words ending in –tion.

 

Science

This term in science the children will be looking at and conducting different investigations to explore a variety of topics. They will be looking at the basic structure of a variety of plants how plants grow, what a flower is, what plants need in order to grow and pollination and fertilization. This term Beech class are also going to be looking at what different toys are made of. They are going to carry out a range of investigations to find the most suitable materials for different toys.

 

Art

This term in Art the children are going to be looking at and making recycling sculptures. During this process they will design and create a sculpture thinking about different techniques they have learnt.

 

DT

In DT this term the topic is Wheels and Axels: An emergency vehicle. They will be building an emergency vehicle that can save the whale from the story The snail and the Whale. They will:

  • Generate initial ideas and simple design criteria through talking and using own experiences.   
  • Develop and communicate ideas through drawings and mock-ups. 
  • Select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks such as cutting and joining to allow movement and finishing. 
  • Select from and use a range of materials and components such as paper, card, plastic and wood according to their characteristics. 
  • Explore and evaluate a range of products with wheels and axles. 

 

 

Music

The first unit the children will be focusing on is The rockpool rock. This unit involves an upbeat song making a real splash, with a spoken second part and rippling blue notes. This unit provides an opportunity to combine singing, playing, and dancing. Children will learn an interlocking spoken part, sing a rock n roll – style song confidently, play an introduction on tuned percussion and listen actively and learn about rock n roll music.

The second unit the children will be looking at is Tanczymy labada. This unit is based around a welcoming Polish circle game with increasingly tricky actions, which will help to develop children’s sense of beat and encourage cooperative play. As well as learning to sing confidently in another language, children will learn to play singing games, play an accompaniment, and invent a 4-beat body percussion pattern. Additionally, they will learn about traditional dances of Poland and plan and rehearse a performance for younger children.

History

This term in history the topic is Changes within living memory: Toys. During this topic the children will create timelines to sequence processes, events, objects within their own experience. Confidently use vocabulary associated with the past e.g. old/ new, then/ now, match old objects to people or situations from the past, describe how some aspects of life today differ from the past using simple historical vocabulary and talk about similarities and differences between two or more historical sources using simple historical terms. They will understand that toys have changed over time, mainly in terms of materials used to make them/ technology for powering/ driving them.

Geography

This term, the geography topic is What is it like to live by the coast? They will be researching the seas and oceans surrounding the UK, what the coast is, the features of the Jurassic Coast, human features in Weymouth and how people use our local coast. The children will have the opportunity to use google earth and atlas’s to find different coasts and locate the seas and oceans surrounding the UK.

RE

In RE this term Beech will be looking at these topics: God – Ideas about God and Specialness looking at special places and churches and Synagogues.

 

PSHE

This term in PSHE the children will be exploring the theme Health and Wellbeing. The children will be learning about several topics based on this theme which are: Why sleep is important; medicines and keeping healthy; keeping teeth healthy; managing feelings and asking for help; Recognising what makes them unique and special; feelings; managing when things go wrong. 

 

PE

This term in PE the children are going to be focusing on three topics.

Games – Athletics activities relating to sports day: running, jumping, throwing, catching, relays and striking and fielding activities

Gymnastics – Movement patterns, linking movements together

Dance – Toys and country dancing

 

Computing

This term in Computing Beech will be learning about three topics:

Digital Literacy – Online Safety

Creating Media – Stop – Motion

Data Handling – International Space Station
